Shiatsu is given on a comfortable futon on the floor.
A person is fully dressed in loose clothing, made from natural fibres if possible, and also as plain as possible (without large buttons, zippers etc.). It is good to have long sleeves and leggings, as it is easier to work through fabric, rather than directly on skin. One should bring clean pair of socks with them if they can (if not I have socks to lend, so don’t worry).
It is advisable not to eat a large meal just before the session. Alcohol and recreational drugs should not be taken on the day of the treatment.
A hot, long bath before or after the session should be avoided – as it can mask and distort the usual flow of energy through the meridians. After the session, some simple exercises may be shown, to do at home.
A person should then rest for a couple of hours (or longer if possible), or at least not engage in a strenuous or stressful activity.
The aftereffects of Shiatsu last for 24 – 48 hours, as the energy continues to circle through the sequence of meridians. During this time it is possible to feel some mild to moderate “negative” effects, such as tiredness, headache, mild flu symptoms, or any kind of emotional response (weepiness, irritation, elated mood etc.). These do not always, or even often, occur, but if they do, they should clear within 48 hours.
An introductory session lasts for up to 1 and a half hour and starts with an in-depth consultation.
A standard Shiatsu session normally lasts 50 – 60 minutes, including a brief resting and feedback time at the end.
A long Shiatsu session (for people who require a significant amount of talking – reflection and guidance) lasts 95 – 105 minutes.
To get the full benefit of the Shiatsu body work I offer, it is best to come for a series of weekly sessions – especially in the beginning. This will allow us to work on different aspects of one’s energetic system – network of meridians – and it will also allow integration of changes and insights gained in the sessions into the whole of one’s life.
The number of sessions required varies a lot from person to person, depending on their unique circumstances. After this initial, more intense period, many clients continue with monthly sessions for a while, in order to stabilise achieved balance and ease.
Once this has been achieved, it is advisable to come for occasional follow-ups, as a health-maintenance measure. Especially good times for these are the changing-of-seasons times – the first three weeks of March, June, September and December.
“I feel completely safe in her hands, so I can relax into a deep inner journey that is unique each time…” Iona Fredenburgh, Process Work Therapist
